Dave;
You are correct. Tackling our existing housing and commercial building stock is one of the biggest challenges of our time. I'm a huge advocate of making older homes more efficient and sustainable. The problem is that so much of our existing stock was built with such dismal quality that it is sometimes impossible and financially not feasible and better to start from scratch. In Google's case there are probably a lot of other factors that influenced their decision. Either way, if more large corporations would do what Google does we would be much better of.

Nice to see Google leading the way yet again.

At the same time though, wouldn't the "greenest, most sustainable building ever" actually be on a previously used site and using pre-existing materials rather than producing more new things on new land? How many houses are sitting abandoned in America today - and google needs an extra 9 acres of land to be sustainable? I just think sometimes we get too caught up in the "recycle" and we forget about "reduce" and "reuse."

I hope more and more people will decide to go custom when building new homes. The reason is that most companies will nowadays offer discounted Green and eco-friendly ways of powering these new homes, reducing the energy consumption and heating needs as well as protecting the environment. Most consumers are opting for customers however we'd need that much more to build houses this way if we hope for some kind of results.

Chris;
Actually you don't. All our framing plans are engineered. There are obviously certain instances where this changes but overall you end uf with a very solid and no less stable structure.

Very interesting, you should do a post discussing green roofing incentives. I recently decided to invest in one after working in the field of roof construction. You should check that out.

A certification program for green builders sure sounds interesting! For custom home builders, the knowledge of building energy efficient homes would definitely be a plus.

Interesting article! Thanks for the info. A certification program for green builders and contractors, particularly in an age where green homes are so much in demand is sure worth a look.
